LumiQube
As Australia moves toward Net Zero targets, communities must become active participants in the transition. Yet awareness is uneven, behaviour change is slow, and progress often feels abstract or out of reach.
FASTLab’s LumiQubes offer a new way forward—bringing climate action to life in public spaces. These place-based, interactive installations turn passive information into tangible experience, helping councils, businesses, and citizens see, feel, and shape the Net Zero journey.
LumiQube is a dynamic, interactive installation that uses sensor technology, touchscreen displays, and community-driven content to activate public spaces. Originally designed for public safety and tourism, LumiQube has now been reimagined as atool for climate education and Net Zero engagement.
Whether visualising local emissions data, gamifying carbon- reducing behaviours, or showcasing community sustainability efforts, LumiQubes make climate action visible, participatory, and real.
The LumiQubes can also be networked together so they can interact with each other - dependent on their placement and relative proximity.
1. Carbon Postcards & Climate Promises
Interaction: Visitors record their hopes, frustrations, or commitments to climate action.
Data: Voice-to-text logs, common themes, engagement trends.
Use Case: Understand community sentiment and motivators for behaviour change.
2. Green Selfie Station
Interaction: Capture a “climate hero” selfie after completing an action or pledge.
Data: Participation rates, social shares, campaign reach.
Use Case: Amplify engagement and normalise climate-positive behaviours.
3. Local Climate Impact Explorer
Interaction: View real-time environmental data (e.g. air quality, heat maps), maps of solar uptake, or urban greening projects.
Data: Clickstream, areas of high interest.
Use Case: Link global issues to local experiences; inform and motivate.
4. Sustainable Living Hub
Interaction: Browse tips, join community workshops, or learn about rebates and retrofits.
Data: Most-viewed resources, preferred channels.
Use Case: Support uptake of sustainable behaviours and programs.
5. Voice-Based Climate Surveys
Interaction: Visitors answer climate questions with their voice.
Data: Anonymised transcripts, question engagement, tone analysis.
Use Case: Build authentic insight into local perspectives on climate policy.
6. Gamified Net Zero Trails
Interaction: Follow precinct-based “Green Trails” with QR checkpoints—bike instead of drive, sort waste, plant a tree, etc.
Data: Completion rates, trail popularity, behaviour types.
Use Case: Incentivise low-carbon habits through fun, family-friendly exploration.
7. Augmented Reality Climate Stories
Interaction: Scan a code to reveal AR overlays showing future flood zones, green infrastructure, or Indigenous land care practices.
Data: AR engagement time, topic interest.
Use Case: Make the invisible future of climate adaptation visible now.
8. Responsive Lighting & Sound Cues
Interaction: Lights and sounds triggered as people approach—highlighting climate stats or playing soundscapes of “climate futures.”
Data: Activation maps, peak hours.
Use Case: Drive curiosity and engagement, even passively.
INTERACTIONS AND DATA COLLECTED:
The types of interactions along with the data each different interaction collects can be varied across each LumiQube enabling clients to prioritise which experiences they want to deliver based on the data they’d like to see on the dashboard (See images below) . In short - these LumiQube’s are highly cusyomisable.
Content can also be updated remotely.FEATURES: The following list of features describes the different types of interactions that can be installed on each of the LumiQube’s. In most cases we recommend a combination of upto 6 possible sensor based interactions per LumiQube.
LumiQube offers a low-barrier, high-impact platform for accelerating Australia’s just transition to Net Zero.
It meets people where they are—on the street, in parks, outside libraries, and gives them tools to understand, engage, and act.
Climate action doesn’t have to be invisible or isolating. LumiQube turns it into a shared, public, hopeful experience.
